The Festival gets a spectacular launch with a formidable recital by the world-class ensemble that the New York Times has praised for producing “A sound that has just about everything one wants from a quartet, most notably precision, warmth and an electricity that conveys the excitement of playing whatever is on their stands at the moment.” Established in 1989, the St. Lawrence String Quartet earned global recognition within only a few years, winning both the Banff Quartet Competition and the Young Concert Artists audition in 1992. Their performance at the Festival showcases three superlative works from three vital periods in the history of the string quartet: a warm and witty piece by Haydn that exemplifies its first golden era; the most extraordinary of Beethoven’s early-romantic “late” Quartets, cast in seven continuous, intensely varied movements lasting 40 minutes; and the third of the 12 quartets that the ever-inventive Canadian master R. Murray Schafer has composed to date.
