Several of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s most adept section leaders and other members come together for a hearty evening of excellent music. One highlight is the Horn Trio by Brahms, a youthful work filled with equal parts exuberance and profound sadness. Hearing Mozart’s tart and refined Quartet for oboe and strings is as refreshing as a glass of fine, dry champagne. Debussy’s haunting Syrinx conjures the same sort of magical, long-ago landscape that he had previously evoked in the Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. It is performed by Kelly Zimba, newly appointed as the TSO’s Principal Flute. Also on the bill is the première of a work by Carmen Braden of the Northwest Territories. Hailed as “a talented, bold musician” (Up Here magazine, 2015), she is a life-long northerner whose music has been described as “drop-dead gorgeous” (Ottawa Citizen, 2014). Guest artist for the evening is celebrated pianist Jane Coop, whom the New York Daily News has lauded as “an artist of unusual distinction.”
