Ravel: Sonata for Violin and Cello
Schubert: String Quintet in C Major, D.956
One of the true masterworks of the chamber music repertoire, the richly emotional and broadly proportioned String Quintet that Schubert composed during the final year of his life, anchors this program. His use of a second cello rather than the second viola that was more common up to that time in String Quintets enhanced its depth of sound and feeling. This is music that will stay with you, long after the performance is over. “I think this Sonata (for violin and cello) marks a turning-point in my career,” Ravel wrote of this tart, neo-classical composition. “The music is stripped down to the bone. The allure of harmony is rejected and increasingly there is a return of emphasis on melody.” Also featured is the String Trio by Gary Kulesha, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s accomplished Composer Advisor.
