Debussy: Sonata for Cello and Piano
Beethoven: String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 95 “Serioso
Elgar: Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 84

Beethoven created his “Serioso” string quartet in 1810, the year after Napoleon Bonaparte’s French army had occupied Vienna, the city where he was living. That catastrophic event may have influenced this piece’s tragic nature. Englishman Sir Edward Elgar composed his big, robust Piano Quintet in 1919. It was coloured by tragic feelings brought about by the recent war. Inspiration for this quintet arose from a cluster of old, gnarled trees Elgar would see on his nature walks. The haunting trees were rumoured to be the dead forms of Spanish monks who were struck dead while practicing sinful rites.
