Sir Ernest MacMillan was on a trip to Germany to see Wagner performed at Bayreuth when WWI broke out and he quickly was taken as a prisoner of war. It was during his time in this POW camp that he wrote his String Quartet, a work that speaks to the ability of music to connect people even in times of great difficulty. Brahms’ serene Clarinet Trio rounds out this afternoon performance, a work that never fails to impress audiences with its soaring themes and complex harmonies.
