Throughout the mid-19th century, the Schumanns toured Russia, performing many of Robert Schumann’s great chamber works, including his Piano Quartet in E flat Major. His work became a major influence on many Russian composers, setting a precedent for chamber music that melded piano with strings. Borodin’s String Quintet was one of his early works, a youthful exploration of chamber music that set the stage for his elegant and expansive strings quartets that were to come. The program comes to a close with Shostakovich’s monumental Piano Quintet, a pillar of the genre that emerged from the oppression of the Soviet regime.
