Inner Voices: Penderecki String Quartet Friday, July 30 at 8:00pm, Walter Hall

Join the Penderecki String Quartet, one of Canada’s most celebrated chamber ensembles, in an unusual and thought-provoking celebration of the inner voices of chamber music. These voices can be found in the work of Schumann and Wolf, both of whom suffered from depression and relied on inner voices to console themselves, and in the supremely extra-musical Quartet no. 4 by Glenn Buhr, whose new work Red Sea, a TSM commission, will be premiered on August 7. As the evening progresses from Haydn to Schumann, the exploration of inner voices becomes a literal one, as the textures of the quartet genre and the roles of the inner strings become more intricate and convolved. A rare and expansive look at the moods and temperaments of the string quartet.
