Q & A with violin master, Martin Beaver!

This week, Toronto Summer Music got a chance to ask world renowned violinist, Martin Beaver, some fun questions about his life and music.  Enjoy!

Q: What’s your favorite thing about the Toronto Summer Music Festival?

A: Without a doubt, playing, rehearsing and exchanging ideas with the fellows is my favourite aspect of TSM. In addition, I am always grateful that TSM affords me a week in the wonderful city in which I lived for many years.

Q: What was your most memorable musical performance? martinbeaver

A: Two occasions particularly stand out in my mind: playing all six Haydn Op. 76 string quartets in one evening in Milan, Italy with the Tokyo String Quartet, and performing an open-air quartet concert in front of Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) in the ancient city of Petra in Jordan – breathtaking!

Q: What is your favourite venue to play in?

A: I must honestly say that my favourite venue is a toss-up between the Wigmore Hall in London and the Kleine Saal at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. That said, I am extremely familiar with Walter Hall at U of T and I enjoy performing there very much.

Q: If you could play another instrument, what would it be?

A: I always had dreams of playing a drum kit, either in rock or jazz music.

Q: When did you know you wanted to be a professional musician?

A: Since I first picked up the violin at the age of four, I knew I would be a violinist. I can’t say when “professional” entered into the equation, but I suppose it was always a natural conclusion for me.
