Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988

Through her many superlative recordings and live concerts, Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt has earned a fantastic international reputation. She performs a broad repertoire, from Couperin to Messiaen, but she is perhaps known best for her interpretations of Bach. A reviewer in Gramophone magazine greeted her 2012 recording of the “Goldberg” Variations with these words of praise: “Beautifully co-ordinated Bach playing, with all voices colourfully defined and spontaneity as a constant virtue. In my view, she has never made a better CD.” This magnificent composition is the 18th century’s greatest set of variations. It was published in 1741 as the final segment of a keyboard collection that Bach entitled Clavierübung(Keyboard Practice). The Aria, upon which Bach based its variations, had previously appeared in the notebook that he created for the musical education of his second wife, Anna Magdalena. The Aria bookends 30 successive variations that display masterful range and ingenuity, and which chart a deeply moving emotional and creative journey.
