This sublime all-Bach program offers a superlative sampling of his multi-faceted composing skills. The blistering Chaconne for unaccompanied violin gives it a spectacular launch. What other composer could coax so much music from just four strings? This imposing set of variations, a stunning emotional journey as well as a demanding, comprehensive catalogue of playing techniques, has long been regarded as a summit of the violin literature. It’s followed by selections from the mighty Mass in B Minor – one of the Baroque period’s supreme masterworks – and with excerpts from one his final creations, The Art of Fugue. This collection of pieces gives a thorough demonstration of how to compose this type of work, one of the most popular of the era and one of which Bach became an unsurpassed creator. Sarah Jeffrey, Principal Oboe of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, joins TSM Artistic Director Jonathan Crow to lead the Concerto for Violin and Oboe. Andrew Wan, Concertmaster of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, takes the helm for both the Chaconne from Partita No.2 and the Violin Concerto in A minor.
