In February 1966, Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich underwent a major heart attack. Much of the music that he composed during the remaining nine years of his life had a spareness of texture and an emotional inwardness that may be traced to the intensified sense of mortality that his illness had awakened within him. That feeling reaches its apex in his very last work, the Sonata for Viola and Piano. Completed in July 1975, it was heavily influenced by Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata, to the point where Shostakovich unofficially subtitled the closing movement Adagio in Memory of Beethoven. It was immediately taken up by prominent viola soloists around the world, and has been recorded more than 60 times.
