Iron Road

Midori Marsh as Lai Guan
Jordan de Souza, Music Director
Composed by Ka Nin Chan
Libretto by Mark Brownell

In partnership with Tapestry Opera, TSM presents Iron Road, the untold stories of Chinese workers who helped build the Canadian Pacific railway in the 1880s. It was written by the award-winning Hong Kong-born Canadian composer, Ka Nin Chan, with libretto by Mark Brownell and Cantonese translations by George K. Wong. The first of the three operas that Ka Nin Chan has composed to date, it was produced and premiered by Tapestry Opera in Toronto in 2001. It recounts the story of a young Chinese woman in the late nineteenth century who travels to Canada in search of her father. Because Chinese women were not permitted to emigrate at that time, she disguises herself as a man. Much of the opera’s thematic content draws on Chinese popular religion, a mix of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. These elements are brought out through character, plot, and the music itself. Reviewing the premiere production, the Toronto Star proclaimed it was a “score for multiculturalism,” suggesting that if Canada’s archetypical opera, Harry Somers’ Louis Riel (1967) is representative of Canadian biculturalism, Iron Road illustrates multiculturalism in today’s Canada.”
