A gala array of music by Mozart and Beethoven launches the festival in high style! His joyous, comical and stirring final opera, The Magic Flute, has long been one of his most popular stage works. You’ll hear a choice selection of music from it, plus an engaging work for cello and piano that Beethoven, Mozart’s keen admirer, based on one of the arias you’ll hear. Beethoven paid further homage to Mozart in the delightful Septet for winds and strings. This update of a Mozart serenade or divertimento won the thirty-year-old composer enormous popularity. Completing the bill is a dynamic, virtuoso piano solo by Franz Liszt. He transcribed all the Beethoven symphonies for piano, and helped raise funds to raise a statue of Beethoven in Beethoven’s birth city of Bonn, Germany.
