reGENERATION: Schubert & Brahms – Crown Jewels

Celebrate the end of the third week of our Chamber Music Institute with the rare opportunity to hear, back to back, these two undisputed crown jewels of classical music: Brahms’ Piano Quintet and Schubert’s String Quintet. While the similarities between these two works might not be immediately evident, Brahms was heavily influenced by Schubert’s quintet while writing his own and in the early stages, the piano quintet was actually scored for two violins, viola, and two cellos, Schubert’s exact instrumentation. Come enjoy these wonderful works and think about what it would have been like if Brahms had never swapped out the second cello for piano!

Brahms: Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34

Jennifer Koh*, Sienna Minkyong Cho, violins; Chung-Han Hsiao, viola; Jacob Efthimiou, cello; Jialiang Zhu, piano

Schubert: String Quintet in C Major, D. 956, Op. posth. 163

Jessy Je Young Kim, Heng-Han Hou, violins; Beth Guterman Chu*, viola; Jaeyoung Chong, Andrew Ascenzo, cellos
