VC2 Cello Duo
Bryan Holt and Amahl Arulanandam
Bring your friends for a fun night out hosted by this powerhouse duo at one of Toronto’s most sensational live music hubs!
Through extensive historical research VC2 Cello Duo have identified several cellist-composers that were close to Beethoven. Though Beethoven himself was not a cellist, he was the first major composer to take the cello seriously, and left behind five sonatas that are at the core of the repertoire. The programme is comprised of pieces by Beethoven’s cellist colleagues, including Anton Kraft, Bernhard Romberg and Jean- Louis Duport as well as four new works written by Canadian cellist-composers: Andrew Downing, Raphael Weinroth-Browne, Fjóla Evans, and Matt Brubeck. Based on the aforementioned sonatas, these new works shed light on Beethoven’s compositional trademarks while spanning a number of musical genres, including jazz, contemporary, world music and heavy metal.
VC2 Cello Duo is an innovative ensemble that captivates audiences through its performances of classical masterworks, unknown gems and boundary-pushing music. They present artistically challenging yet accessible programs in venues ranging from intimate cabarets to Roy Thomson Hall. Committed to the creation of new works by living composers, especially those from their home country of Canada, VC2 commissioned five Canadian composers to create works based on the Beethoven Cello Sonatas. They will perform four of these works at this TSM concert, plus a new commission by Vincent Ho. In addition to their performances, VC2 recorded these pieces, and in 2018 released the album Beethoven’s Cellists, which CBC Radio calls a “first-rate” recording.
