The sensational duo of Jonathan Crow and Philip Chiu treat us to Beethoven’s Sonatas for Piano and Violin throughout the Festival. Join us for the first instalment of this exciting series!

Since Beethoven played both piano and violin at a fully professional level, composing music for the two instruments together came quite naturally to him. His 10 sonatas for violin and piano are cornerstones of the repertoire. In previous years, in many of Mozart’s numerous sonatas for this pair of instruments, for example, it was the piano that dominated rather than the violin. He took some steps toward placing the two instruments on a more equal footing, but Beethoven was the first to achieve that goal in full. Their creation spanned his “middle” and “late” periods, from 1798 to 1812. Sonatas 1 and 3 (which he dedicated to Antonio Salieri) are sunny, energetic works that lie firmly within the Classical style of Haydn and Mozart. The more Romantic-style Sonata No. 7 (which he dedicated to Tsar Alexander I of Russia) shows a considerable increase in substance and pathos over the previous sonatas.
