Beethoven: Violin Sonatas
Op. 12 No. 2 in A Major
Op. 24 No. 5 in F Major, “Spring”
Op. 30 No. 8 in G Major
Op. 96 No. 10 in G Major
In this finale to a three-part series, Jonathan Crow and Philip Chiu dazzle us once more with their masterful renditions of Beethoven’s Sonatas for Piano and Violin.
Sonata No. 5 is relaxed, bright and sunny – the source of its anonymous but entirely appropriate nickname, “Spring.” It forecasted the warm, genial personalities of such other Beethoven works to come as the Pastoral Symphony (No. 6), Violin Concerto, and Piano Concerto No. 4. The concluding rondo maintains the sonata’s genial personality, steering clear of virtuoso display in favour of lyrical, Mozartean entertainment.
