Welcome to the 2020 TSM Festival! This summer, we invite you to join us for Beethoven Unleashed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of this iconic composer and the legacy of his indelible cultural influence.
Beethoven and his music conjure ideas of universal expressions of the human spirit that transcend the ‘Classical’ or ‘Romantic’ labels that history has given them. Celebrating the human spirit is also about celebrating experimentation—reveling in music that is both ahead of its time and symbolic of its own time. We shine a light on Beethoven’s œuvre and show how his music echoes through generations, influencing composers and performers to this day. From new orchestral works, to pop songs, film scores, and contemporary chamber music, this master’s voice from the past can be heard in so many genres and artistic forms of the present.
We are excited to showcase several magnificent artists on our festival stage this summer. The 2020 season includes a star-studded Opening Night hosted by CBC’s Tom Allen; a thrilling art song recital from Benjamin Appl and Wolfram Rieger; an exquisite marriage of music and dance from Echo Chamber Toronto; the internationally-renowned Danish String Quartet; superstar pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin playing the Emperor Concerto in Koerner Hall; a special collaboration with Tapestry Opera to present Iron Road in concert; and, world premiere by celebrated Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy. What’s more, the fantastic Philip Chiu and our own Artistic Director Jonathan Crow will be playing the complete set of Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas in a 3-part concert series! Not to be missed are our popular reGENERATION Saturday concerts featuring our talented Academy Fellows.
We look forward to seeing you this summer!
